Project Overview

Jasmine, a data scientist, wanted a professional space to showcase her projects and articles, highlighting her problem-solving approach and insights. The website needed to balance clarity with personality, giving her a platform to attract clients and potential employers while positioning her as both skilled and approachable.

Project type:  UX Design

Case study timing:  2 weeks

Role:  UX Designer, Researcher

THE DESIGN BRIEF

PROBLEM

Jasmine didn’t have a personal website, which made it difficult for her to present herself professionally. Without a dedicated portfolio, she lacked a central space to showcase her projects, articles, and skills, which limited her ability to stand out when approaching clients or applying for jobs.

PROJECT GOAL

The goal was to design a portfolio website that demonstrated Jasmine’s technical expertise while also reflecting her personality and story. The site needed to feel professional yet approachable, helping her attract clients and employers by building trust and clearly showing the value she brings.

Process

Must Have

To begin the process, I looked at a range of data science and data analyst portfolio websites to get a sense of common practices and effective layouts. This gave me a direction for what essential sections should be included, such as

  • About page

  • A clear showcase of Projects

  • A Blog or Articles section to highlight thought leadership

  • Contact page for opportunities

Design Decisions

Clarity

On the homepage, Jasmine introduces who she is, highlights her expertise, and provides links to the social platforms where she is active.

Easy-to-Scan

Projects are presented in an easy-to-scan format with an image, title, and short description.

To highlight her technical expertise, the portfolio opens with a project built in Power BI, making it both visually engaging and easy for visitors to understand her skills and approach.

Article Cards for Quick Browsing

To make her multiple articles easier to explore, we designed card layouts that include an image, title, and estimated reading time. This helps visitors quickly scan and choose what interests them most.

To encourage further reading, we have added a “Related Posts” section at the end of each article, suggesting a few relevant pieces for users to explore.

Easy-to-Navigate

Because Jasmine’s project documentation was extensive, we added navigation buttons at the top of the page, allowing users to quickly jump to different sections with a single click.

Final Design

What I Learned

Working on this project taught me the importance of clarity and structure when designing a personal portfolio. Even small design choices like how projects are presented or how articles are organized can make a big difference in how approachable and professional the site feels. It also showed me that simplicity often works best when the goal is to highlight skills and attract opportunities.
